A Novel by Dan Cornelious
"Ten thousand years beneath the Nevada desert, they have been waiting. Now, the passage is open."
In the lonely stretches of the Nevada desert, generator technician Eli Merritt uncovers a sealed passage hidden where no passage should exist. What begins as a strange discovery beneath Razor Gulch soon becomes something far more dangerous — a descent into a world older than memory, guarded by silence, fear, and ancient warnings.
Locals know the canyon has always carried stories. Missing people. Strange symbols. Places no one goes twice. But Eli has never believed much in legends — until the legends start reaching back.
As the line between the surface and the world below begins to fracture, Eli is pulled into a mystery that threatens everyone closest to him. Something beneath the desert has been waiting. And now that the Narrow has been opened, it may not stay hidden for long.

Eli Merritt is a quiet Nevada technician with a soldier’s instincts and a habit of keeping things to himself. When he stumbles onto something hidden beneath the desert, his need for answers pulls him toward a truth that could cost him everything he still cares about.

Dr. Layla Reyes built her life around the idea that life could survive in places no one thought to look. After her career was shattered, she is drawn into a discovery that may prove she was never wrong — but some truths are dangerous in the wrong hands.

Ryznk comes from a civilization built on secrecy, discipline, and survival. But buried history has a way of resurfacing, and Ryznk may be one of the few willing to question what his people have been taught to fear.

Maggie Snyder is grounded, perceptive, and stronger than most people realize. As Eli’s secrets grow heavier, she becomes the one person who can still pull him back from the edge — if he lets her.

Kim is curious, restless, and drawn to mysteries bigger than herself. Her dreams and drawings begin to hint at something beneath the desert — something the adults around her may not be ready to understand.

Long hidden from the surface world, the Zargatans exist in the shadows of human history. Ancient, secretive, and divided by fear, they guard a truth that could change everything humanity believes about the world beneath its feet.
"Once the story starts moving, it becomes hard to put down. The mystery, atmosphere, and pacing keep you turning the pages."

"Atmospheric, creative, and full of mystery, this sci-fi thriller builds a world that feels ancient, dangerous, and impossible to ignore."

"The Narrow is a nail biting, goosebumps stirring sci fi thriller of epic proportions. The passage, discovered by Eli is not just a doorway, but a boundary between two connected civilizations. The hidden world of the Zargata creates disorientation, for it is a civilization has existed in parallel with humanity for time immeasurable. The introduction of the Zargata reptilian society was especially compelling. This was an A+, subterranean thriller that I found highly enjoyable."

"The hidden doorway to another world always seems intriguing until it’s super dangerous and everything on the other side wants to kill you. It gets even weirder when you realize the threat has been generational starting with Robert and then Eli and then next Kim when she starts drawing pictures of the Hollow One. It's a pretty wild thought that something could take away your memory and basically erase your existence. It is also a crazy thought that a whole other world or realm of creatures could be living just right below us or around us somehow and we don't even know it."

"This book captures your attention and does a good job of holding it. I’ve read a few “alien” books before and they weren’t really my thing, but this book really held my attention the entire time. I was especially interested in how the tribes had history with the reptilians and how there were certain people who knew what was going on. I think the book also makes you wonder about governments and how they can be involved in covering up certain types of situations. I thought it was really interesting that even though Eli and the sheriff were ex military they didn’t call in anybody else for back up."

"This book is definitely mysterious and odd. It is a good book where reptiles and humans co-exist in a world where they live parallel. When Eli discovers the reptilians through a secret passage, he discovers a whole new world of politics, history and secrets. Eli must navigate this world with his own while staying safe and protecting both civilizations. I liked how this book was different and it was well written."

"The Narrow is an intriguing blend of science fiction, ancient mystery, desert folklore, and suspense. The story pulls you in with a strange discovery in a Nevada canyon and quickly expands into something much bigger, involving hidden civilizations, forgotten histories, and a terrifying force known as the Hollow One. I really liked the contrast between Eli, a wounded and determined human trying to understand what he has uncovered, and Ryznk, the red-scaled reptilian outcast who is just as curious and afraid on the other side of the wall. Their connection gives the story emotional weight, while the mystery surrounding the underground world keeps the pages moving. The book has a strong cinematic feel, with eerie tunnels, strange symbols, ancient warnings, and a growing sense that something buried for centuries is waking up. It combines adventure, suspense, mythology, and creature-feature elements in a way that feels fresh and imaginative. Readers who enjoy sci-fi mysteries, hidden worlds, ancient civilizations, and slow-building supernatural danger will likely enjoy this one. It is an ambitious debut with a lot of atmosphere and big ideas."

"Dan Cornelious’s The Narrow opens with Eli Merritt waking in a hospital after a brutal attack, bleeding and confused, while Deputy Sam Wallace quietly warns him not to repeat what he saw because “it was no mountain lion.” That moment, along with Eli’s daughter Kim asking if a “monster” hurt him, stood out because it turns a supposed animal attack into something far more unsettling and mysterious. The book mattered to me because it immediately builds emotional stakes through Eli’s family while layering in suspense, and it would appeal to readers who enjoy tense thrillers with survival elements and a creeping sense that something unnatural is being hidden."
